The conference also saw the launch of a scientific alli

The alliance will serve as a new platform for international coordinati

The conference was co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Association for Science and Technology, the U

The traditional family model of the man bringing hom

the bacon and the woman looking after the family doesn’t seem to have changed much eve

n today. As a result, Chinese mothers still shoulder most of the responsibilities of raising kids.

In the absence of fathers, mothers are more likely to pay greater attention to their kids and their

education. This could not only prevent the children from learning life skills, but also make them bur

dens for their mothers. And the greater the burden they become, the more their mothers would be stressed out.

Yet such anxiety could be easily shared by, if not transferred to, other family members. A highly emotional yet anxious moth

er is more likely to make a wrong decision about her child’s education, which in turn could have a negative imp

act not only on the child’s healthy growth but also the health of the mother and the husband-wife relationship.

The meeting on Sunday decided on further steps to

identify unwarranted certification items for abolition and list all certification items deemed ne

cessary. At the same time, work to establish a pre-commitment qualification system will be intensified.

“The reform of the qualification system is part and parcel of our efforts to build a credit-based society. Without a fully fledg

ed credit-based society, our business environment will not see significant improvements,” Li said.

It was decided at the meeting that the practice of pre-commitment of qualification will be piloted in 13 pro

vinces and municipalities, including Tianjin, Liaoning, Shanghai, Guangdong, Sichuan and Shaanxi, and in five mi

nistries-the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Justice, the Minist

ry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Transport.

Manufacturing remains in expansion territoryoducts at

The growth of manufacturing activity in China eased in April but remained within expansion territory, adding to the confidence that the country’s economy is stabilizing.

The purchasing managers index for the country’s manufacturing sector came in at 50.1 in A

pril, slightly down from 50.5 in March, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while one below it reflects contraction.

Senior NBS official Zhao Qinghe said in a statement that factory activity continued a steady ex

pansion in April, with the subindexes for production and for new orders standing respectively at 52.1 and 51.4. T

he readings are slightly lower than those in March, but they are higher than the average performance of the first quarter.

“Market demand is driving a stable growth in production,” Zhao said, adding strong growth in e

merging industries, such as high-tech and equipment manufacturing, also contributed to the steady performance.

ut a careful survey by James Laurenceson, of the Austr

Anti-China media stories focus on large campaign donatio

ns to Australian political parties by Chinese businessman Huan

g Xiangmo. But of the 300 companies in the Australia-China Chamber of Commerce, none donates to po

After 9/11, the US surveillance became more intensif

fied. Shortly after the attack, the US government introduced the Patriot Act, the Accuracy Act and

the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which formed a comprehensive intelligence surv

eillance network. According to a survey by Privacy International in 2007 covering 47 countries, the United States ran

ked first in the monitoring index. But the United States didn’t stop there. In 2013, Edward Snowden, a technical an

alyst at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), exposed the Prism program. In this seven-year top-secret electronic sur

veillance, monitored individuals include non-Americans who use related company services, or any US citizen who co

mmunicates with foreigners, including email, video and voice conversations, and social network details, and so on, can be descr

ibed as large-scale indiscriminate monitoring. Surveillance states were finally formed.

Xi underlines studies on May Fourth Movementnjiang

The call made by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, for more study of the

May Fourth Movement, will help younger generations better understand the value of its spirit, observers said.

Xi underlined the need to strengthen studies of the May Fourth Move

ment and its spirit during a speech at the group study session of the Political Bureau of the C

PC Central Committee on Friday, according to a news release issued on Saturday.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the movement launch

ed by young intellectuals and participated in by people from all walks

of life. It was a political, anti-imperialist movement that stemmed from student demonstrations in Beijing on May 4, 1919.

Presiding over the session on the historical significance and modern value of the movement, Xi said the studies shoul

d elaborate on why the movement is of great and far-reaching significance for development and progress in conte

mporary China, and why Marxism has become a guide for the cause of the Chinese people’s revolution, construction and reform.

French officials said the EU faced “blackmail” by hardli

ine pro-Brexit potential successors to May, such as Boris Johnson. They might try to sabotage decision-making, they said.

However, Merkel has urged the bloc to do all it can to avoid such disruption. She said before leavin

g Berlin that she favoured a delay of “several months” for May, who has pledged to quit if hardcore Brexi

t supporters in her own Conservative Party drop objections to her “soft Brexit” and help ratify the deal.

Keen to ease tension, Merkel had broken the ice as talks began by showing May a photomontage on a tablet of both wearing similar jacket

s when addressing their parliaments earlier in the day. It provoked mutual laughter as other leaders joined in.

As talks wore on beyond midnight, with May patiently waiting elsewhere in the buildin

g for word on her nation’s fate, Macron rallied support for his concerns about a long extension.
